For those who do not already know, carpool or carpooling is when you combine with others to make a trip (by car). What does this imply. To pay less and to help the environment by going in the same direction with people you do not know. At travelsmart I understood better what is all about. Basically it is a database where you sign up and say where you are going, what time and how many available seats are in the car and a number of contact.The trip costs are divided equally to all participants. If I want to go on holiday and I want to do carpool, I access the site and see what options I have.
Denis Barrow, a good friend of mine, the one who created the site, wants to give the code to everybody for free to make the carpool well known. Do you think that this is a good idea? And how can it be promoted?

Although the robots.txt file is a very important file if you want to have a good ranking on search engines, many web sites don't offer this file.

If your web site doesn't have a robots.txt file yet, read on to learn how to create one. If you already have a robots.txt file, read our tips to make sure that it doesn't contain errors.

What is robots.txt?

When a search engine crawler comes to your site, it will look for a special file on your site. That file is called robots.txt and it tells the search engine spider, which web pages of your site should be indexed and which web pages should be ignored.

The robots.txt file is a simple text file (no HTML), that must be placed in your root directory, for example:

http://www.example.com/robots.txt

How do I create a robots.txt file?

As mentioned above, the robots.txt file is a simple text file. Open a simple text editor to create it. The content of a robots.txt file consists of so-called "records".

A record contains the information for a special search engine. Each record consists of two fields: the user agent line and one or more Disallow lines. Here's an example:

User-agent: googlebotDisallow: /cgi-bin/

This robots.txt file would allow the "googlebot", which is the search engine spider of Google, to retrieve every page from your site except for files from the "cgi-bin" directory. All files in the "cgi-bin" directory will be
ignored by googlebot.

The Disallow command works like a wildcard. If you enter

User-agent: googlebot Disallow: /support

both "/support-desk/index.html" and "/support/index.html" as well as all other files in the "support" directory would not be indexed by search engines.

If you leave the Disallow line blank, you're telling the search engine that all files may be indexed. In any case, you must enter a Disallow line for every User-agent record.

If you want to give all search engine spiders the same rights, use the following robots.txt content:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/

Where can I find user agent names?

You can find user agent names in your log files by checking for requests to robots.txt. Most often, all search engine spiders should be given the same rights. in that case, use "User-agent: *" as mentioned above.

Things you should avoid

If you don't format your robots.txt file properly, some or all files of your web site might not get indexed by search engines. To avoid this, do the following:

Don't use comments in the robots.txt file
Although comments are allowed in a robots.txt file, they might confuse some search engine spiders.
"Disallow: support # Don't index the support directory" might be misinterepreted as "Disallow: support#Don't index the support directory".
Don't use white space at the beginning of a line. For example, don't write
placeholder User-agent: *place Disallow: /support

but

User-agent: * Disallow: /support
Don't change the order of the commands. If your robots.txt file should work, don't mix it up. Don't write
Disallow: /support User-agent: *

but

User-agent: * Disallow: /support
Don't use more than one directory in a Disallow line. Do not use the following
User-agent: * Disallow: /support /cgi-bin/ /images/

Search engine spiders cannot understand that format. The correct syntax for this is

User-agent: * Disallow: /support Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /images/
Be sure to use the right case. The file names on your server are case sensitve. If the name of your directory is "Support", don't write "support" in the robots.txt file.
Don't list all files. If you want a search engine spider to ignore all files in a special directory, you don't have to list all files. For example:
User-agent: * Disallow: /support/orders.html Disallow: /support/technical.html Disallow: /support/helpdesk.html Disallow: /support/index.html

You can replace this with

User-agent: * Disallow: /support
There is no "Allow" command.
Don't use an "Allow" command in your robots.txt file. Only mention files and directories that you don't want to be indexed. All other files will be indexed automatically if they are linked on your site.

Many webmasters overlook a very important aspect of web site promotion: the validity of the HTML code.

What is valid HTML code?

Most web pages are written in HTML. As for every language, HTML has its own grammar, vocabulary and syntax, and every document written in HTML is supposed to follow these rules.

Like any language, HTML is constantly changing. As HTML has become a relative complex language, it's very easy to make mistakes. HTML code that is not following the official rules is called invalid HTML code.

Why is valid HTML code important?

Search engines have to parse the HTML code of your web site to find the relevant content. If your HTML code contains errors, search engines might not be able to find everything on the page.

Search engine crawler programs obey the HTML standard. They only can index your web site if it is compliant to the HTML standard. If there's a mistake in your web page code, they might stop crawling your web site and they might lose what they've collected so far because of the error.

In addition, you should avoid services that promise you 2000 links to your site within a week or so. If they link to you at all, these 2000 links are of poor quality or they don't have a similar topic as your web site.

Use common sense. Offers that sound too good to be true probably aren't true.

How to rank well with Flash sites

Search engines can only "see" pure text. They are not able to recognize text on an image or text that appears as a graphic in a Flash movie.

Google advises on its webmaster guidelines page: "If fancy features such as [...] Flash keep you from seeing all of your site in a text browser, then search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your site.".

So how can you achieve high search engine rankings in spite of Flash contents?

First of all, you should re-consider using Flash on your web site. Keep in mind that many visitors still use slow dial-up connections to access web pages. They don't like to wait 1-2 minutes only to see your company logo fancy animated. Your Flash movies must carry invaluable information to the visitors, otherwise they will be disappointed.

Entry pages that only show your company logo are becoming more and more annoying to users. Using web pages like company brochures only show that your company didn't get the whole Internet idea.

Keep in mind that not everyone has installed the Flash player. Always add a link to a web page that contains the same important information as found in the Flash movie in plain text.

For these reasons, not using Flash or building a duplicate site without Flash are the easiest ways to make sure that your web site visitors and the search engines can access your web site.

If you really must use Flash on your web site, the following tips can help you getting your Flash contents indexed by the search engines:

The frequency of your search engine submission is not important

When you submit your web site URL to a search engines, you basically ask the search engine spiders to visit your web site and to evaluate it. If the search engine spiders cannot find anything useful on your site, they won't list your web site. It doesn't make sense to submit your web site again and again if it isn't search engine ready.

Search engines must be able to find out what your web site is all about. They need to find text and links on your web pages and they also need to find the keywords for which you want to have high rankings on your web pages.

Submitting alone doesn't guarantee visitors

Some search engines will be able to index the text you enter in the NoFrames tag. The contents you enter there should be text that is related to your site. It should contain your most important keyword phrases, but should remain readable to your Web site visitors.

You should place the NoFrames tag just before the </frameset> tag in your frameset, for example:

Once you've created the new page, view the HTML source of the page and copy everything from within the <body> and </body> tags. Then paste the new content within the <body> and </body> tags found within the NoFrames tags of your frameset.

Note that the text between NoFrames tags in our example contains a link to the main frame set page. That way, Web surfers with older browsers that don't support frames will also be able to visit the page.

Don't use a list of keywords within the NoFrames tags and don't try to overuse this tag because the search engines might penalize your web site for that.

Even if you use the NoFrames tag, it's still difficult to get a good ranking for a web site that uses frames.

If at all possible, avoid frames on your site.

Many search engines recommend limiting the number of letters in the title and in the meta tags. If your web page title or the meta tags contain too many filter words, you might reach the character limit before your important keywords begin.

Some words can get you banned on search engines

While filter words might dilute the effectiveness of your other keywords, some words might get your web page banned on search engines. These words are called stop words.

Adult words and phrases that contain sexual content are the most common stop words. However, some search engines build custom stop word lists to penalize web sites that use "keyword stuffing". Some sites use the same keyword over and over on their pages to get a high rank for that keyword on search engines, even if it is not related to their content.

Kitty O’Shea founder in Belgian tax fraud probe

The Belgian public prosecutor is seeking a suspended prison sentence for one of the founder’s of the Kitty O’Shea pub chain, amid allegations that he gave gifts to a VAT officer to avoid paying €300,000 in tax.
Kevin Loughney, referred to in court reports as Irish businessman Alexander Loughney, together with a Belgian tax official, are the defendants accused in the case. Both men deny the charges.
Loughney confirmed to The Sunday Business Post that he is the subject of the case, and said his full name is Alexander Kevin Loughney.
The VAT officer involved in the case, Easter Wulf - who is also facing a possible suspended prison sentence - said in a Belgian court last week that Kitty O’Shea’s pub in Brussels was a good business up to 2002 until renovation works began at the nearby Berlaymont building.

He claimed the pub suffered from these works and, furthermore, that the Belgian boss of the pub made off with some of the business’s money. Loughney told The Sunday Business Post this weekend that the allegations were ‘‘outrageous’’.

Yahoo Patent Filing Sheds Light On PageRank

Finds fault with Google's Secret Sauce

As complex as Google's PageRank may be, search experts at Yahoo seem to think it's not complex enough. Based on patent filings, Yahoo is dabbling in ranking algorithms that incorporate more user behavior data in advance of the company's next run at toppling Google's haloed relevance.

Seeing will be believing when it happens, of course, as Google is highly secretive about how its search engine calculates PageRank. If history is any indication, they're already way ahead on behavioral factoring.

Nonetheless, Yahoo can afford the best search engineers in the business (if they can get them before Google does, anyway) and the patent filings shed some light on how PageRank is currently calculated and ways it might be improved in the future.

Bill Slawski, Director of Search Marketing at KeyRelevance, goes into painstaking detail of Yahoo's user data challenges at his SEObytheSea blog. Patent language, especially when dealing with algorithms, can be confusing and dense, so we'll just highlight a few interesting points and leave the lexicographical deciphering to you.

Some Yahoo assumptions about PageRank and flaws associated:

Internal and external links are often weighed equally even though internal links can be less reliable and more self-promotional. Some links, like disclaimer links, are rarely followed.
PageRank ignores that webpages are often purchased and repurposed, decay or become less valuable over time at variable rates.
Current calculations, like TrustRank, are engineered more to combat webspam than to reflect actual user behavior.
Sometimes PageRank deals with links in bulk, aggregating according host or domain, also known as blocked PageRank.

What Yahoo plans to do about it:

Measure link weight – influenced by the frequency with which users follow a link
Note when links are ignored and users leave (teleport) to another page of their choosing
Calculate the probability that a user stops and reads a webpage rather than views it and moves on.
Incorporate user data into the algorithm – "User Sensitive PageRank could reflect "the navigational behavior of the user population with regard to documents, pages, sites, and domains visited, and links selected."
Personalize PageRank based on demographic information – age, gender, income, user location)
Emphasize recent information
Weigh anchor text more heavily – the patent filing calls anchor text "one of the most useful features used in ranking retrieved Web search results"
